- The gatekeeping.

- The “omg did you SEE what they posted?”
- And the worst one of all… the “I suffered so you should too” mentality.

Here’s the truth nobody wants to admit:

You weren’t born knowing how to expose a frame. You didn’t magically skip the phase where every edit was orange, every session was overshot, and you delivered 200 images because you didn’t know what else to do.

You figured it out by trying, failing, and trying again (just like they are).

We’re not competitors. Someone else getting a camera does not take clients out of your hands. There is room in this industry for more than one photographer in a 10-mile radius.

Skill, experience, and client experience still matter. A LOT.

So instead of tearing down the next generation of photographers…
- How about we guide them?
- Encourage them?
- Show them what professionalism and community actually look like?

Supporting newer photographers doesn’t diminish your work. It doesn’t make you less luxury, less experienced, or less successful.

It makes the industry better.
It makes you better.

Let’s be the generation of photographers who share, uplift, and collaborate… not the ones who bully beginners because it makes them feel superior.

Not because I don’t want new photographers to win. Not because I don’t want to help out passionate new photographers. But because skipping the part where you learn your craft will hurt you more than help you.

I built my business from the ground up with YouTube as my mentor and a $200 used Rebel T3 I bought with saved birthday money. I upgraded only after I earned the money to do so—trading in old gear as I grew my skills and my business.

I don’t have “spare” cameras lying around to give away because they went towards upgrading my gear.

If you’re just starting, you don’t need a $3,000 camera.
You need curiosity, consistency, and whatever you have in your hands right now. You can start with an iPhone and outshoot someone with a full-frame camera if you understand light, composition, and storytelling.

Giving someone a pro camera before they’ve learned the basics would actually be a disservice.

Start where you are. Master what you have.
The gear comes later. 📸💪

1️⃣ Cheap kit lenses — terrible in low light, soft focus, and you end up replacing them anyway.

2️⃣ Super cheap Amazon tripods — wobbly, break instantly, and cannot hold real gear.

3️⃣ Random props I never used — tiny chairs, baskets, fake flowers… all lived in my closet.

4️⃣ Every Lightroom preset bundle ever made — none of them matched my style, and I spent more time “fixing” them.

5️⃣ Backdrops I thought would make me ‘look professional’ — creased, ugly, and dated fast.

6️⃣ Cheap flash units — inconsistent power, slow recycle time, and honestly stressful to work with.

7️⃣ A camera backpack that fit NOTHING I actually owned — looked cute, functioned terribly.

8️⃣ Lens filters I didn’t need — bought because “everyone else used them.” Joke was on me.

3️⃣ Shoot in bad light just to “get it done.”

Lighting makes or breaks a portrait. Harsh sun, dim rooms, mixed color temps — all deal-breakers. Clean, flattering light always comes first.

4️⃣ Over-edit skin or alter someone’s features.

Heavy retouching and reshaping never age well. Natural, timeless edits will always win.

5️⃣ Ignore the small details that elevate a portrait.

Wardrobe, hand placement, posture, hair, angles — the subtle things matter. Great portraits come from intentional details, not luck.

2. I calculated what I actually needed to earn per session to pay myself AND cover my expenses.

(Yes, that includes rent, gear, insurance, software, COGS, and taxes.)

3. I built in profit margins—on purpose.

Your price isn’t just your time. It’s the cost of staying in business.

4. I stopped offering mini sessions every time I needed quick cash.

Minis can serve a purpose—but not if they keep you stuck in hustle mode.

5. I created a pricing structure that rewarded fewer, higher-value bookings.

Not more bookings that left me drained.

6. I gave myself a raise.

Literally. Your pricing should grow with your skill, experience, and cost of living.

7. I learned to confidently say, “That’s the price.”
